Lightning is the weather phenomenon that is always associated with a thunderstorm. While hail, heavy rain, and snow can occur with some thunderstorms, they are not guaranteed components: hail depends on very strong updrafts and freezing layers, heavy rain is common but not universal, and snow isn’t typical for the warm, vertical air motions that drive most thunderstorms.
